Suzan Drumming is a spectacular visual artist who makes paintings, photographs, films, installations and works in public space. The works are a playful investigation of space, illusion, optical effects and other visual phenomena as part of a broad exploration of visual perception and the limits of beauty and seduction. There is an ongoing inquiry into the limits of visual seduction, and the threshold between seduction and repulsion.
The installations for example, are made from crystal, chrome-plated metal, precious stones, mirrors and optical glass. From a distance they appear clear and orderly, yet upon closer inspection, the eyes become disoriented by the many details and visual stimuli. That moment, of being able to take it all in or not, is explored, time and time again. The visual perception is challenged, requisitioned and intensified.
Her works are a combination of very intuitive searching and very conceptual planning. Intuitively she had studied the context and the spot, trusting her eyes. This way she ‘found’ lots of things that are more interesting than what she could have imagined beforehand. Then she reflected on it all and came to decisions that she executed consistently and meticulously.
Suzan often works with intangibly thin kinds of contrasts. The one-dimensional painting is in any case at odds with the optical illusion of space shown in it. Painting sometimes seems a form of magic: with a brush and paint you can turn a flat space into a spatial illusion that is ‘almost real’. The thinner the paint is, the bigger this illusion. The overlapping and interweaving of foreground and background cannot be fully comprehended by the eye, which means that you are forced to think about it.
She started as a painter. Then she started making three-dimensional work. The superficial, in the literal meaning of the word as well, greatly interests her: the outside of things, that what you see first, the skin that is sensitive and intimate, the light that literally shines on something and reflects it again. Analysing the outside of things is also revealing. DESIGHSIGH is tremendously impressed by Suzan Drummen, the way she saw the things and the way she have shown them to the world. She is a true artist and wonderful persons! With her works she corresponded with other people in a really positively and weird way!Great imagination!
